Scalea and its surrounding areas, nestled in picturesque Calabria, are a true paradise for cycling enthusiasts, offering a variety of routes and breathtaking views. The warm, Mediterranean climate allows for cycling for most of the year, avoiding the extreme summer heat and freezing winters. After a vigorous ride, you can savor exquisite Calabrian cuisine, rich in fresh seafood and local products, all at a very attractive price rarely found in Europe.
The diverse terrain, from flat, coastal paths ideal for family rides to challenging mountain climbs for avid cyclists, means Scalea has something for everyone. Long, asphalt roads along the Tyrrhenian Sea coast offer spectacular views and a refreshing sea breeze. Outside of August, many roads are relatively uncrowded, which increases safety and cycling pleasure. Scalea and its surroundings are safe for cyclists, especially off the main roads.
Routes often lead through charming, traditional Calabrian villages, offering an opportunity for a short break and a taste of local specialties. The immediate vicinity of the Pollino massif offers countless opportunities for mountain bikers, with winding roads and demanding ascents. Pollino National Park is the largest national park in Italy, with a network of trails and roads that lead through wild nature and offer incredible views.
Many routes pass through areas rich in history, alongside ancient ruins and medieval castles. Ascents to the surrounding hills reward cyclists with breathtaking panoramas of the coast and mountains. Scalea is well-connected, making it easy to get there with your bike or rent one locally. Beyond cycling, the region offers numerous beaches, cultural attractions, and opportunities for relaxation.
